NEW RESEARCH: DOGS UNDERSTAND US BETTER THAN WE THINK - PARTICULARLY WITH NOUNS

  • A new university study on dog brains demonstrates they understand much more than "sit", "fetch" and other simple instructions. I am fascinated by dog science because I believe our best friends are smarter than we know.  Here's what the latest science tells us - Dogs love nouns like ball, toy, treat:
  • Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary utilized electroencephalography to monitor dogs' brain activity
  • They comprehend the meaning of nouns such as their favorite toys
  • The capacity of understanding is in all dogs, the study showed
  • The strongest connections between object and noun was where the object was most relevant to the dog, such as a dog who loves to play ball knows the word ball immediately
  • A 2022 survey showed that dog owners believed their dogs responded up to 215 words
  • Guess what - Psychologists in South Carolina found that after intensive training a Border Collie learned the names of more than 1,000 objects
  • My Winnie is all over every word - she loves play, treats, toys, each toy's name and location and every game to learn how to have more fun. She's my little rascal!

BOOM SST HITS THE SKIES

  • Colorado-based Boom's SST, XB-1 took a successful flight for the first time - a 12-minute, sub-sonic test flight over the Mojave Desert.  Here are some key facts:
  • XB-1 is likely to be the first commercial SST since the Concorde
  • During the test flight it reached speeds of 238 knots
  • It also performed a series of maneuvers to test how it handles and the flight control system
  • This is tremendous aviation technology developed over ten years at a cost of millions of dollars
  • When fully developed, it will fly at twice the speed of sound
  • Will cut flight times nearly in half
  • SST travel DC to Dublin in 3:35 rather than current 6:25
  • Computer designed with a carbon fiber body with modified delta wings
  • Currently in prototype form uses 3 GE J85 engines
  • Cameras provide the pilot with an AR view of the plane's surroundings
  • Will be tested at the supersonic level after 10 to 20 more test flights
  • Boom is expected to start carrying passengers in their SST by the end of this decade.
