New Buyer for 100,000 EVs & New Production Facility
Luxury electric sedan maker Lucid Motors of California does not have the branded household name that Tesla does. But technologically in some ways Lucid Air sedans out-class and out-perform Tesla models and other EVs, according to automotive experts. Very recently, Lucid Motors has made several moves on the chessboard against its archrival Tesla. The California-based startup has just secured an order for 100,000 Lucid EVs from the government of Saudi Arabia over the next ten years. The price for the Lucid Air starts at $77,400 with some models kicking in at $95,000, $139,000 and $179,000. The final price-tag of this deal has not been disclosed yet, but it is going to be a huge payday for the California startup. The Lucid Air is the #1 luxury electric vehicle of 2022, according to Cars.com. Lucid is also expanding production capacity. It will open a large car production facility in Saudi Arabia that will be capable of producing 150,000 cars a year for international distribution. Lucid's 1st production facility is operating in Arizona. The Saudi factory will be its second. The Saudi Arabian connection is important to Lucid. Saudi's Public Investment Fund owns 62% of Lucid Motors.
EV Tech Wars and Tech Specifics
With EVs, range on a charge is an all-important key indicator. Lucid Air has groundbreaking, miniaturized electric motors with one on each axle. Together the e-motors pump out 800 hp (1,111 hp in their most powerful configuration) and 885 lb-ft of torque. Lucid's game-changing battery technology provides 520 miles on a charge and the quickest recharge speeds in the market. Currently, the Tesla 2022 Model S Long Range with its 95-kWh battery has a range of 405 miles. It should be noted that Tesla is constantly pushing the range it can achieve on its models and upcoming models to set the range standard.
Lucid Is in the EV Game
Clearly, Lucid is a big player in the EV global market game with big orders, expanding production capacity and highly advanced technology. The exterior of its electric sedans is elegant, classic and clean. The interior is spacious, luxurious, tech-focused and airy. The dashboard has a 34-inch glass panel with several high-resolution screens. A second touchscreen is placed between the driver and passenger and can be retracted for a more minimalist look. Much of the ceiling is glass. The styling of the EV is beautiful, the technology is awesome and according to MOTORTREND, the driving is "shockingly good". Sounds like a great competitor against Tesla and other EVs. For more news stories like this, go to Breakthrough Concept Cars 2020's
