Innovation to Potentially Cut 900 Million Plastic Toothpaste Tube Throwaways Per Year
This is a new invention at the crowdsourcing funding level. From Canada, tablets of toothpaste for your use with no need of toothpaste tubes. Why is this idea significant? It's all about plastic pollution and the environment. Tubes of toothpaste aren't something you think about but their impact on the global environment is hugely negative. 900 million toothpaste tubes are discarded into oceans and landfills globally every year. Importantly, it takes 500 years for them to breakdown, which means virtually every toothpaste tube created is still discarded someplace in the world. And, the tubes, which contain multiple layers of plastic, polymers and resins, can't be recycled. A company headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta Canada just came up with a solution in the form of tablet toothpaste to eliminate the need for plastic tube containers of toothpaste.
"Paste with No Waste"
Entrepreneurs Mike Medicoff and Damien Vince are the inventors and founders of CHANGE Toothpaste. Their tablet toothpaste is an all natural vegan substance that works just like toothpaste but has no harsh chemicals. You pop the pill in your mouth, crunch on it and scrub your teeth with a wet brush. They dub the product "Paste with No Waste", specifically no empty plastic tubs left behind.
Sustainability Mission and Crowdfunding Expansion
CHANGE Toothpaste's mission is to "enable sustainable consumption of everyday products, like toothpaste, by everyday people". The company was established in January 2019 and is now in the process of crowdfunding expansion. The tablets can be ordered and are packaged in 100% compostable paper pouches. Monthly orders of 65 tablets at $9.95 are available. The company says their product is a small change that reduces the consumer's environmental footprint. And if the toothpaste tablet trend takes hold, it could have a significant positive impact on the global environment.
